“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”

     -Frederick Douglas

Our Fayette County Public Schools are experiencing a crisis of students experiencing homelessness. Our community needs to address this issue on many fronts: these children are our future, and they aren’t responsible for their homelessness.

The Give Kids A Home Campaign is a community wide effort to raise funds for emergency housing for the students and families (including families with children younger than school-age) who are experiencing homelessness. In the 2023-24 school year, 1097 students in FCPS experienced homelessness. The McKinney-Vento Program of FCPS works tirelessly with each school to support the children who are unhoused in our schools to succeed in the classroom despite their living situations. However, there is no emergency housing for the families once our shelters are filled, and our shelters have been staying full for the past 2 years: winter, spring, summer and fall.

The Catholic Action Center works with the McKinney-Vento Program to help provide emergency housing for families who are living in their cars, on the streets, in sheds, storage units or other uninhabitable places. With the help of trained Connectors, the Give Kids A Home program has successfully provided emergency housing and the path to permanent homes for 33 families with 124 children.

The 2024-2025 GKAH Program is requesting tax deductible donations by individuals, faith communities, businesses and organizations for the increased need to shelter these families for the 2024-25 winter months: all donations to the GKAH Fund supports their emergency housing needs and journey toward a permanent home.
